Peppermill Class
What: AWA Class involving Turning a Peppermill with a Twist
When: Saturday, Oct 10th from 9 am – 1pm
Skill Level: Beginner/Intermediate
Cost: $75.00 (includes wood and peppermill mechanism)
Instructor: John Lane
This class is not about turning a classically shaped peppermill. In this class you will turn and drill a 10-inch peppermill, but we will shape it to resemble an owl. It will involve turning a sphere by using a jig and/or ways of turning it freehand. You will also learn different ways to either turn or drill the eye sockets that gives it that classic owl appearance. This class is designed to test your spindle turning skills. And who knows, this project could make a nice Christmas Gift.
All classes will be held at 720 W. 58th Ave, Unit E in Anchorage.

What: AWA Class involving Turning a Laminated Plate
When: Wednesday, Oct 28th from 5:30 – 9:30 pm
Skill Level: Beginner/Intermediate
Cost: $65.00 (includes all materials)
Instructor: John Lane
This class is all about turning a dinner/hors d’oeuvres plate. It will be turned from a laminated 1-inch-thick wood blank and will include how to create the lamination. You will also learn different ways to mount the relatively thin blank for turning. This is a fun project that will test your turning skills. Then the real test will begin when you take your project home and create a set of these plates all matching in size and design.
The AWA holds several woodturning classes each year. Students must be a current member-in-good-standing to take any of these classes.
All members are eligible to enroll in the beginning classes (see notes below for those under 18 years of age). Other classes may require some level of experience. Please see class description for recommended experience levels.
The Following Applies to All Classes
- A full refund will be given for all classes canceled at least two weeks in advance. Since it is often difficult to fill classes at the last moment, refunds will only be given for cancellations within two weeks of the class if the spot can be filled with another participant.
- A signed Release of Liability is required and will be available at the class. Students under 18 years of age must have a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian.
- Class location is normally on Ship Creek Avenue in Anchorage. Directions will be supplied to those who sign up and pay tuition for the classes.
- You are encouraged to bring your own tools; however, you may borrow club tools if needed.
- Most classes are limited to 10 students and will be filled on a first come first serve basis.
- If there are less than 8 students registered at the start of class, it may be canceled. If canceled, you will be given a choice of a refund or rescheduled at a different date.
- Students less than 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent. For these students you must email Bob Flint at [email protected], as Bob will have a few additional questions about the student.
Please click here to email Bob Flint if you have any additional questions about classes.
Beginning Woodturning Classes (Set of 2 days)
This beginner series of classes is open to all current AWA members (see notes above for those under 18 years of age). This series is normally spread out over 2 weekend days. The first day starts off with the basics about the lathe and safety, then moves into spindle turning. The second day is devoted to bowl turning. Class hours are Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm. There are normally 10 open slots in this class. When filled a waiting list will be available. If there is enough interest in a second class, it will be offered at another time.
